AI functionality in Excel

For those that use Microsoft Excel on a regular basis, you have probably noticed the Copilot button on the menu ribbon.

While most software has AI built into the functionality at some level, Microsoft has given the user an opportunity to directly use it while working in the file. In this case Excel.

I’ve been experimenting with the built in Copilot function in Excel (see my post dated April 20th where I explain the cash flow experiment). Today though I want to call out the ease to use it when it’s built right in. My auditors initially pointed it out to me because they have been utilizing it for their audits. I like the ease of use (no attaching files). Additionally, it will scan the file and make suggestions to what it can analyze. Given the intent of starting this blog, I like the suggestions!!

This isn’t a paid advertisement for Microsoft (although they are welcome to do so), I do appreciate the convenience and effectiveness that I’ve experienced so far.

There’s also opportunity for add-ins. My employer uses ChatGPT and there’s a beta add-in if that’s preferred over the built in Copilot which is a Microsoft product.

I encourage you to try it if you’re using Excel. If you’re like me and still trying to find ways that AI can help, prompt it to tell you how AI can help with the file and go from there. I’m sure any AI can be prompted the same by attaching a file, this makes it easier and more efficient.

Give it a try and share it.
