I wonder if our dependence on using AI will make us lazy. In my early research I listened to a book recording that suggested to interact with AI as a collaborator and not become dependent upon it. That always stuck in my mind and certainly shaped my approach to incorporating it into my professional life.
However, today I found myself looking in the mirror and trying to figure out how to lose 10 pounds. I went to AI and gave a thorough description of myself, my current activity level and my goals. It presented a pretty interesting output but then I continued to prompt it and drill down.
It finally concluded with a weekly plan for exercise and diet. I even asked for recommendations for the vegetable based protein powder (which raises sponsorship questions affecting results).
The whole time though I realized that there was very little thinking or effort on my part. Yes I would normally go to a personal trainer and nutritionist for a plan but that means appointments and back and forth conversations. This plan was 20 minutes sitting on my couch (which was NOT part of my prepared plan to lose 10 pounds).
So I wonder what will we become? Will we be so dependent on our computer and devices that we’ll forget how to think and figure things out ourselves? I know the possibilities of AI to make us amazing is exciting and I’m a huge advocate for doing amazing things. But I think of what I heard at the beginning of my research journey and I’m slightly embarrassed that I fell into this trap. It was too easy to sit here on my coach.
What about the finance profession? Will we start to depend on AI to do all our forecasts and projections, as well as the record keeping that is so crucial to understand our business. We will be walking zombies, unable to understand what is happening. Maybe I’m too “old school” and I know I’m not quite at the point that I can fully take advantage of the technology in my field. However, we need to work in collaboration with AI to make us better finance professionals.
Just something to think about.
