This past few week, there’s a lot in the news about whether or not AI has advanced enough to take over all our technology destroy humankind. And if it does, humans are unable to defend ourselves!
Everyone is weighing in, including former employees of the big AI companies, the CEO’s of said companies, politicians, etc. The opinions are from both sides of the story. Some say yes, we need guardrails while others say no, the fear is exaggerated.
My gut is telling me to believe the employees and CEO’s of the AI companies in that they’re in this every day to understand it the most and they have the most incentive for stability. Even if it’s a financial incentive, I don’t see how some sort of guardrail is a bad thing.
I’m all for free markets and allowing for invention and competition, but I also think that we need to be sensible. If we can all agree to certain guidelines and rules that we can all play with, then why is that so bad. The biggest risks seem to be at the cutting edge of this technology. The interaction we’re having with AI each day is just how do we be more productive.
I just hope that those pushing the envelope are being responsible. This isn’t the first time in humankind where something with so much potential for good can also be so destructive. Historically sensibility has prevailed and I think this will happen in here as well. However it’s good that there are those who are courageous enough to ring that bell.
